    The Environmental Sanitation Taskforce of the Assembly on Thursday, May 31, 2018arrested ten (10) people for defecating openly. The persons arrested were Francis Ackon, Dickson Sey, Johnson Freeman, Emmanuel Botwe, Christian Addo, Nana Yaw, Emmanuel Lartey, John Bart-Plange, Samuel Quainoo and Isaac Obboye.

     

    All the 10 people were fined and paid a spot fee of Gh¢ 200.00 (Two Hundred Ghana cedis) after which they were cautioned to desist from the practise.

     

    The arrest is in line with the Assembly’s effort to reduce the rate of open defecation in the Metropolis. The Assembly has so far arrested eighty (80) people for defecating openly since the beginning of the year. Some of the areas these arrest took place were Mpintsin, Bakado, close to the Takoradi Cape Coast Station, Essipong, Kansaworodo, Ntankoful, Kwesiminstsim and Anafue in Sekondi.

     

    According to Section 14 of the Assembly’s bye-law on Solid and Liquid Waste Management,“No person shall defecate or urinate in any public or open place other than in an approved toilet facility”.

     

    The Assembly intends to continue the exercise to arrest and prosecute people who openly defecate till the menace is significantly reduced or eradicated within the Metropolis.
