The Western Regional Minister and Ag. Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah has formally launched the ‘Operation Paint Your Building’ campaign to encourage property owners in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis to paint or repaint their buildings. At the launching ceremony held at the Assembly’s Chamber, Hon. Okyere Darko said that the campaign has the potential to change the face of the metropolis to the rest of the world if it receives the expected support from all stakeholders involved.

He indicated that paint on a building or any structure is not only meant to enhance the beauty or the outward aesthetic looking, but also ensures its longevity as much as possible. “A building’s paint is most often the first thing to attract attention, and this shows the importance of external beauty conditions of a building in creating an impression on individuals or organizations. Aside that, painting protects the exterior of a building from the constant exposure to the harsh weather conditions,” he said.
Paragraph two of the STMA Bye-Law on Maintenance of Premises, 2017 states that “a household or an owner or occupier of a premises within the area of administration of the Assembly shall keep the house clean, white washed and/or painted on regular basis at least once every five years”. The STMA therefore intends to enforce this section of the bye-laws as part of the effort to make Sekondi-Takoradi the smartest city in the country. Post Image

He added that the campaign will also address the issue of abandoned, uncompleted and dangerous structures that are in a state of disrepair, dilapidation or collapse and pose threat to lives and properties. As part of the Assembly’s support to the campaign, the Ag. Mayor indicated that the Assembly is in the process of engaging a paint manufacturing company to sell to building owners in the Metropolis at a discounted rate. This arrangement is expected to be completed as soon as possible for interested property owners to take advantage.

He further noted that color codes will be assigned based on the local plans of the Assembly as part of the implementation strategy. The Hon. Minister indicated that a three-month sensitization programme has therefore been planned to create awareness on the ‘Operation Paint Your Building’ after which enforcement of the bye-law will be intensified. He therefore urged all property owners, especially those along the ceremonial roads at the Nkroful Junction to Apollo Highway, Takoradi Accra Highway, Takoradi Kwesimintsim Highway as well as those in and around the Central Business District of Takoradi and Sekondi to observe this campaign accordingly.
