The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly has presented a total number of Four Hundred and Fifty (450) Classroom Desks, made up of 400 Mono and 50 Dual Desk valued at GHs84,460.00 to the Metropolitan Education Directorate to facilitate effective teaching and learning in the various schools
Presenting the desks to the Metro Director of Education, Mrs. Elizabeth Akuoku, the Mayorof Sekondi-Takoradi, Hon. Anthony K.K. Sam re-emphasize the government's commitment to ensure quality education for all children of school going age. He added that the presentation forms part of the responsibilities of the Assembly at creating conducive environment for teaching and learning in the schools in a bid to improve the standard of education in the Metropolis.
Hon. K. K. Sam again intimated that, the attainment of quality education by children should not be the responsibility of the government alone, he therefore called on parents and all stakeholders in the Education Sector to also contribute to complement the government's effort to train our future leaders.
The Mayor indicated that the Assembly will not spare any head teacher who will fail to take good care of any items supplied to the schools by the central government or the Assembly.
He further cautioned head teachers to desist from the practice of renting the classrooms for churches activities. "The practice of renting classrooms to churches seriously contributes to the fast deterioration of furniture in most of our public basic schools", the Mayor said. "If adults are using chairs meant for children and these chairs are also regularly moved in and out of the classrooms, the chairs will definitely be weak and broken down in no time".
He therefore tasked the Metro Education Directorate to exhibit good maintenance culture and ensures that the furniture is used for their intended purposes.
In her speech, Mrs. Elizabeth Akuoko expressed her appreciation to the gesture and said that the furniture could not have come at any better time because most schools in the metropolis are currently battling with furniture problems.
She promised to orient proper supervision to ensure that all beneficiary schools properly utilize and maintain their classrooms teacher and pupil’s furniture.
