The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), through the Twin-Cities in Sustainable Partnership Project (TCSPP), has held a ceremony to present a grant to arts and crafts artisans in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis. The grant, was intended to recapitalize artists to produce artworks for exhibition during a Transnational Cultural Festival scheduled for June and September in Sekondi-Takoradi and Palermo June and September, respectively. In all, fifty-four (54) artisans received various sums amounting to GHS 236,013.00. Addressing the ceremony, the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Hon. Abdul-Mumin Issah, noted that the presentation is the second of three financial and logistical supports to identifiable groups through the EU-funded Twin-Cities in Sustainable Partnership Project (TCSPP). He acknowledged that artists in the region face numerous challenges, such as inadequate governmental support, exploitation by middlemen, inappropriate and restricted working areas, limited adoption of new technologies, and insufficient capital. To address these challenges, the Hon. Issah mentioned that a Technical Team is working to co-create a Marketing Strategy to boost the Arts and Crafts sector in Sekondi-Takoradi. He indicated that the document would address some of the challenges facing artists, establish effective market linkages with domestic and international buyers, encourage the adoption of new technologies to improve finishing, and bridge the linkage between academia and local artisans to improve production, marketing, and research. Hon. Abdul-Mumin also announced the plans to revamp the Metro Arts and Crafts Gallery into a modern status to attract artworks from all artists for exhibition and sales as part of the sustainability plan for the sector. He further expressed the Assembly’s determination to improve the economic opportunities for the artists, increase the market value and recognition of indigenous arts and crafts, enhance collaboration between stakeholders in the arts and craft sector, and ensure sustainable growth and development of the arts and craft industry in Sekondi-Takoradi. He urged the grant beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly and to register their businesses properly, as the STMA will continue to monitor their progress and provide support.
