The Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Hon. Abdul-Mumin Issah, has hinted at government’s commitment to enhancing road networks within the country. He mentioned that this is evident with the introduction of the District Road Infrastructure Programme (DRIP), which aims to equip all the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with road construction equipment for regular road maintenance across the country. He indicated that the programme seeks to empower all Assemblies to conduct routine maintenance to make their roads motorable till the government is ready to lift their status to an engineered one.

He revealed that the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has received 4 Tipper Trucks, 1 Grader, 1 Backhoe, 1 Roller, 6 Concrete Mixers and 1 Water Tanker for the DRIP. The Mayor made these revelations at Eshiem in the Essikado-Ketan Sub-Metro during an interaction with the media, updating them on the Assembly’s workplan to utilize the equipment to benefit the inhabitants within the Metropolis. Hon. Mumin Issah pointed out that the DRIP coordinators will supply the construction materials and fuel for the road works. Outlining the Assembly’s workplan, the Metro Urban Roads Engineer, Mr. Michael Dzisi, indicated that work has already began within the Essikado-Ketan Sub-Metro on the Mpintsin-Eshiem Road. He added that two weeks-work of reshaping, watering and gravelling would be done on the Eshiem road. Other critical roads like the Eno–Kojokrom, and Kojokrom-Ketan bypass roads will receive equal attention to ease the congestion around the Kojokrom market.

Mr. Dzisi mentioned that the reshaping works would be carried out in all three Sub-Metropolitan Councils to ensure that roads in the Metropolis are in good shape. He added that such activities would be carried out quarterly to make the roads accessible. He revealed that suppliers of the equipment would be responsible for the maintenance for a period of two years, after which the Assembly would take over the maintenance. The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on July 31, 2024, commissioned 2,240 road equipment to be distributed to all the MMDAs to improve the road infrastructure across the country. The equipment includes bulldozers, graders, backhoes, rollers, tipper trucks, water tankers, and concrete mixers.
