The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), through the EU-funded Twin-Cities in Sustainable Partnership Project (TCSPP),
in collaboration with Joy News and Connect FM, has commenced the unannounced visits to inspect the sanitary conditions of households and commercial
facilities in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis as part of a campaign dubbed, "Operation Clean Your Surroundings".
The program started from the Takoradi Sub Metro with visits to eight (8) food preparation and vending points, two (2) public places of convenience,
two (2) bakeries, a flour mill, a drinking bar and a transport terminal. The nuisances found include lack of standard dustbins, exposed food for
sale to dust and flies, insanitary drain with refuse, preparing food under insanitary conditions, selling food without medical certificates of
fitness and accumulation of RPCs (i.e., articles packed haphazardly, which is likely to harbour reptiles, rodents and cause accidents) on premises.
A task force headed by the Metro Environmental Health officer, Mr Abdul Karimu Hudu, issued caution notices to operators of some facilities visited.
The team will continue their unannounced visits at Sekondi Sub Metro at a date yet to be confirmed. In an interview, Mr Hudu noted that reported cases
of typhoid and malaria at the various health facilities in the Metropolis keep increasing, and the campaign will among others, address some of the causes
of these illnesses. He stressed his outfit's commitment to prosecute sanitation-related offenders during and after the campaign.
The STMA, in partnership with some media houses, launched the "Operation Clean Your Surroundings" campaign on Wednesday, November 22, 2023,
to promote good hygiene practices. In the end, the Assembly intends to increase awareness of cleanliness, hygiene, waste management, and
environmental preservation. The campaign will educate, arrest, prosecute, name and shame sanitation-related offenders across the Metropolis.
