STMA Observes National Ozone Day with Awareness Workshop

In celebration of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on September 16, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) hosted a one-day workshop to raise awareness about ozone depletion and its environmental impacts. Organized in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the event marked the 37th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol under the theme "Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action". Addressing the participants, Western Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mr. Shine Fiagome, emphasized the importance of the workshop in educating the public about climate change and the need for attitudinal shifts to protect the ozone layer. He noted that further engagements, including visits to selected public institutions such as the Senior High Schools, are planned to enhance awareness and understanding.

Mr. Joseph Baffoe of the Climate Change/ Ozone Unit of the Environmental Protection Agency explained the critical role of the ozone layer in absorbing harmful UV radiation. He highlighted that ozone-depleting substances (ODS) pose serious health risks, including skin cancer, weakened immune systems and eye cataracts. He urged the adoption of ozone-friendly products to mitigate these dangers. Mr. Isaac Kwabena Danso of the Climate Change/ Ozone Unit also stressed the importance of employing certified technicians to service refrigerators and air conditioners. He again encouraged tree planting to combat climate change. Mr. Johnson B. Hasford from the EPA reinforced the need for good refrigeration practices and proper food storage to prevent contamination and protect the ozone layer.

Representing the Metro Coordinating Director, Alhaji Abu Mahama shared the STMA’s initiatives, such as the “Sekondi-Takoradi Youth in Climate Action” (SYCA) programme, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies. This initiative involves nine youth groups, including Senior High Schools, focusing on developing and implementing climate-resilient projects. Alhaji Mahama assured the EPA of STMA’s commitment to executing climate-related projects and encouraged continued collaboration in future initiatives.
