LOW TURNOUT RECORDED AT THE DECEMBER CLEAN-UP EXERCISE IN SEKONDI-TAKORADI.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) on Saturday, 13th December 2025, organized the final national sanitation day clean-up exercise of the year across the Metropolis as part of preparations for the Christmas festivities

The exercise was aimed at improving environmental cleanliness ahead of the festive season and reinforcing the importance of community participation in sanitation management.
The Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Hon. Frederick Faustinus Faidoo, led a team of management members of STMA to inspect the exercise at selected locations. The inspection tour was to assess participation levels, monitor compliance, and interact with residents and sanitation officials on the ground.

Hon. Faidoo, after the inspection, expressed disappointment at the low turnout of residents in some communities, noting that the exercise could only achieve its intended impact when residents actively participated. “Environmental sanitation is a shared responsibility. It is worrying that participation remains low, especially at a time when we are preparing to host visitors for the Christmas festivities,” the Mayor stated.

He emphasized that regular sanitation day clean-up exercises are critical for creating awareness and encouraging ongoing community involvement in environmental cleanliness. The Mayor said improved sanitation helps reduce related diseases, enhances public health, and makes the Metropolis more attractive for tourism and local economic activities.

The Mayor further urged residents to take personal responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean beyond the designated sanitation days, stressing that cleanliness should be a daily practice rather than a periodic activity.

The national sanitation day clean-up exercise is an initiative to promote a cleaner and healthier urban environment. The STMA has reiterated its commitment to strengthening enforcement of sanitation by-laws while continuing public education to improve participation and compliance across the Metropolis.

Residents were encouraged to support future exercises and collaborate with the Assembly to ensure a clean and safe Sekondi-Takoradi during the festive season and beyond.
