The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Sekondi–Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Abdul-Mumin Issah, has commissioned two separate 6-unit Classroom blocks with ancillary facilities at Diabenekrom Catholic Basic “B” and Rhyner Paul Anglican Basic School in Ngyeresia communities, respectively, to enhance enrolment in basic schools. Addressing the gathering at a handing-over ceremony, Hon. Abdul-Mimin Issah pointed out that the commissioning formed part of the nationwide rollout of over 80 educational infrastructure projects under the leadership of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Vice President, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the sector minister, the Honorable Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum in a quest to promote education and enrolment at the basic education levels. He added that the initiative forms part of the Government’s broader commitment to ensure that every child, irrespective of their location or circumstance, has access to a conducive and decent learning environment that stimulates improved learning outcomes.
He indicated that the provision of infrastructure was not only limited to building the structure but also to open doors to countless opportunities, adding that “It is a bridge connecting rural and urban opportunities, a foundation for innovation, and a platform for nurturing dreams which will enhance learners' experience, boost teacher morale, and reaffirm the Government’s transformation of socio-economic fortunes through education.” The MCE highlighted that the initiative aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to ensure inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all. He stressed that the new classrooms would boost student and teacher morale and contribute to the socio-economic development of the area.
Further, the Mayor urged the local communities, including teachers, parents, and school management committees, to take pride in and care for the new facilities to ensure their long-term usefulness. He also mentioned that the Assembly has commenced the process to procure furniture for the classrooms to ensure a comfortable learning environment. He further noted the intervention by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to set up Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centers in the two schools. The Metro Director of Education, Mr. Edmund Aggrey-Forson, noted that good facilities ensure well-groomed children and therefore thanked the Assembly for the gesture, which in his view, would promote learning in the Metropolis. He reiterated the need for the beneficiary communities to own the projects and urged the PTA and SMCs of the schools to take charge and ensure periodic maintenance of the facilities.
