The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), through its Social Welfare and Community Development Department, has presented items valued at GHC143,187.60 to thirty-one (31) Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) within the metropolis. The items distributed included ten deep freezers, ten ice chest freezers, one water pump, one oven, two laptops, one washing machine, and financial support for healthcare needs for some beneficiaries.

Addressing the recipients, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Fredrick Faustinus Faidoo, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to improving the living conditions of persons with disabilities in Sekondi-Takoradi. He noted that the Assembly continues to comply with the mandatory three percent allocation of the District Assemblies Common Fund for the PWDs.

According to Hon. Faidoo, the fund enables the Assembly to conduct needs assessments and provide targeted support that empowers PWDs to become productive and self-reliant. He further cautioned the beneficiaries that officers from the Assembly would monitor the use of the distributed items to ensure they are utilized for their intended purposes. He urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the support and wished them success in their various ventures.

The Metro Social Welfare and Community Development Officer, Ms. Constance Baiden, explained that all applications were carefully reviewed by the Fund Management Committee before the final selection of beneficiaries. She added that a needs assessment was conducted to determine the specific support required by each successful applicant.

Ms. Baiden emphasized that the initiative is aimed at empowering persons with disabilities to become economically active and reduce dependency on their families, reinforcing the belief that disability is not inability.
