The Western Regional branch of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) organized a beachside gathering for about 180 members at the Takoradi Vienna Beach as part of this year’s celebration of May Day.

Addressing the event, the Regional Secretary, Mr. Joseph Kwame Tawiah, described the get-together as the first of its kind, noting that previous celebrations were limited to brief refreshments. With increasing participation over the years, the Association decided to introduce the beach gathering to provide a relaxing and memorable experience for members, he said.

He further highlighted the Association’s annual tradition of recognizing outstanding contributions. The 2026 prize of a chest deep freezer was presented to Mr. Enoch Borzah, the longest-serving District Secretary from Nzema-East, for his dedicated service. Mr. Tawiah also announced the successful completion of district-level elections and encouraged both newly elected and returning officers to bring forward innovative ideas to strengthen the Association.

Participants at the event expressed excitement, with many noting it was their first time joining a May Day parade. They commended the Regional Executives for the initiative, which provided an opportunity to network and build stronger connections across districts, and called for similar activities in future celebrations.

The event ended on a lively note, with members enjoying a beachside feast of local delicacies, including kenkey with fried fish, waakye, and assorted drinks. The success of the gathering is expected to inspire more engaging and inclusive May Day celebrations in the years ahead.

The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, addressing the May Day parade held at the Ghana Secondary Technical High School, commended Ghanaian workers for their resilience and contributions to national development during the 2026 May Day and Awards Ceremony.

Speaking on the theme “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods Beyond Macroeconomic Stability,” he emphasized that workers are not expendable tools but key partners in development. He stressed that economic stability must translate into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens, including job creation, increased productivity, better incomes, business growth and sustainable livelihoods.

According to the Minister, the true measure of growth lies in the availability of decent jobs, fair wages, worker security and the hope families have for the future. He acknowledged ongoing concerns among workers, such as low remuneration, rising living costs, occupational risks, delayed benefits and job insecurity, and called for continuous dialogue and practical policy interventions. The Minister also urged employers in both the public and private sectors to uphold the dignity of labour by ensuring fair compensation, safe working conditions, and adherence to labour laws.
