STMA DISTRIBUTES NKOKO NKITIKITI TO BENEFICIARIES TO BOOST LOCAL POULTRY PRODUCTION

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), in collaboration with the Government of Ghana, has commenced the distribution of broiler chicks as part of efforts to promote local poultry production, create employment opportunities and enhance food security in the country.

The initiative, which seeks to transform agriculture into a modern and productive venture, is aimed at increasing food production and productivity, reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported poultry products and creating sustainable livelihoods for beneficiaries.

As part of the programme, the first batch of broiler birds was released on 18th July 2026, following four weeks of brooding in accordance with the programme’s operational guidelines. The birds are being distributed to selected beneficiaries who previously registered to participate in the programme.

Speaking on the purpose of the gathering, the Metro Director of Agriculture, Ms. Deborah Frimpomaa Gyasi, explained that the Department of Agriculture, together with veterinary officers, would provide the necessary technical guidance and support to beneficiaries throughout the production cycle.

She encouraged beneficiaries to adhere strictly to recommended poultry management practices and explained that the birds were expected to be sold between six and eight weeks after production. The proceeds, she added, were expected to serve as seed capital for beneficiaries to continue with subsequent cycles of poultry production.

Ms. Gyasi further indicated that the official launch was intended to formally enrol participants who had registered under the programme in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, with particular emphasis on beneficiaries within the Takoradi Constituency.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Fredrick Faustinus Faidoo (Esq.), said the initiative formed part of the Government’s broader vision of building a food-security, self-reliant and prosperous Ghana through strategic investment in agriculture.

He urged beneficiaries to regard the birds as valuable business assets and to work closely with agricultural extension officers to ensure proper management and productivity.

The MCE noted that, when properly managed, poultry farming could contribute significantly to household nutrition, generate sustainable incomes and create employment opportunities for other members of the community.

He therefore encouraged beneficiaries to take the programme seriously and make prudent use of the opportunity to establish sustainable poultry enterprises.

The STMA, through its Department of Agriculture, will continue to provide technical support and monitoring to ensure the successful implementation of the programme and contribute to the development of a vibrant local poultry industry.
