STMA INTENSIFIES SANITATION DRIVE WITH SUB-METRO CLEAN-UP EXERCISE

by STMA / March 25th, 2026 /

The Sekondi Sub-Metropolitan District Council of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) hosted the April edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise across the communities in the district council on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

The exercise, which brought together residents, assembly members, security agencies, market women, sanitation workers, and youth groups, formed part of the Assembly’s renewed strategy to improve environmental cleanliness and public health within the metropolis.

Earlier this year, the Assembly made a strategic decision to decentralize the organisation of the regular sanitation exercise to the sub-metropolitan level. The move, according to the Director of Waste Management Department, Mr. Edwin Bonsu, is aimed at ensuring more effective mobilization, increased community participation, and improved supervision of sanitation activities.

The clean-up targeted public spaces and communities in the sub-metro council, including Sekondi Market, European Town, Adiembra, and Kweikuma, where participants undertook sweeping, desilting of drains, collection of solid waste, and clearing of overgrown vegetation.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of STMA, Hon. F. F. Faidoo, led a team of assembly officials to monitor the exercise. The monitoring tour enabled the team to assess the level of participation, identify sanitation challenges, and engage residents and Assembly members.

Addressing the media after the exercise, the MCE emphasized the importance of sustained community involvement in maintaining a clean environment. He noted that sanitation remains a shared responsibility and called on residents to adopt proper waste management practices beyond the regular exercises. He further reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to strengthening sanitation management systems, including improved waste collection and intensified public education on environmental cleanliness.

Participants of the exercise commended the Assembly for the initiative and pledged their continued support to ensure cleaner surroundings. Some residents called for regular waste collection services and enforcement of sanitation by-laws to complement the clean-up efforts.

The Assembly has announced that the next phase of the clean-up exercise will be held in the Essikado-Ketan Sub-Metropolitan District Council, as part of the rotational approach to cover all sub-metros within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

The initiative underscores STMA’s broader agenda to promote sustainable urban sanitation and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
