The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has received the third batch of ten Blue Water Guards trained to protect water bodies and promote responsible mining practices within the metropolis.
The presentation ceremony, held at the Assembly premises, forms part of a national initiative aimed at safeguarding Ghana's water resources from pollution and degradation, particularly from illegal mining activities. In all, fifty-two (52) Blue Water Guards have been assigned to operate in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
The Deputy Manager in charge of Community Relations at the Minerals Commission, Mr. Stephen Agbo, formally handed over the guards to the Assembly. He noted that the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to protecting water bodies from pollution and destruction. “Clean water is essential for public health, livelihoods, and future generations. You have undergone rigorous training to monitor, report, and support enforcement efforts against illegal mining activities. We are confident that your deployment will significantly contribute to safeguarding our rivers and streams”, he said.
Mr Agbo further admonished the guards to be diligent and refrain from accepting or demanding any inducements from the illegal miners. He urged the Assembly to integrate the guards in the security operations to monitor and control the activities of illegal miners in the Metropolis.
Receiving the guards on behalf of the Metropolitan Chief Executive, the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Mohammed Alhanssan Yakubu, expressed appreciation to the Ministry and Minerals Commission for extending the programme to the metropolis. He noted that the Assembly would collaborate closely with the guards and other stakeholders to protect the rivers and other water bodies within the jurisdiction. He assured that the Assembly will provide the necessary institutional support to ensure the guards succeed in their mandate. He further advised the guards to demonstrate good behaviour to justify their engagement by the government. He noted that the Assembly would not hesitate to recommend the dismissal of anyone who exhibits a bad attitude towards the work.
A representative of the Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan Constituency and Deputy Minister of Health delivered a solidarity message on behalf of the MP. Hon. Prof. Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah congratulated the guards and noted that the initiative is a significant step towards protecting river bodies and preserving the environment for future generations. “Our rivers and coastal waters are vital to our health, livelihoods, and national development, and safeguarding them is a shared responsibility. You are not only protectors of our waters but also ambassadors for environmental stewardship. Serve with integrity, courage, and dedication”, Hon. Ayensu Danquah said. She also commended the Minerals Commission and its partners for the successful execution of the initiative.
The Blue Water Guards are expected to work with Assemblies, traditional authorities, and local communities to monitor activities along water bodies, report illegal mining operations, and educate the public on the importance of preserving the environment.
